After immerse myself in the number of Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall could not stop reading this book, whose protagonist is a character that Diana Gabaldon Secondary made known to travelers: Lord John Grey . As always the author's retail boom is going outlining a portrait of London society of the mid-seventeenth century I, from the exquisite salons of the nobility to the most sordid dens. Reveals an aspect that is rarely played in the historical novels and homosexuality and transvestites. The documentation work is commendable and as always put us head descriptions in the novel, not to mention the story is very interesting from the first pages in a relatively short novel that reads very fast.
For those who have read the Outlander series and placed in it, this story starts one year after the departure of Lord John and Jamie Fraser from the prison of Ardsmuir (3 rd novel of Series: Traveling) to put it in Helwater to avoid deportation to the colonies.
Lord John and a private matter is primarily a story of intrigue and suspense , where the protagonist investigates the murder of a fellow regiment, suspected of espionage and a family affair that could turn into a scandal in the family of Grey. Love is conspicuous by its absence, so if you seek a story like Jamie and Claire, you will not find among these pages.
The only downside, if you have one, is that to read this story must take into account some background in the life of Grey, as his "friendship" with Jamie Fraser, Claire awakens feelings in him or her stay in Scotland. Ignoring these details do not prevent understanding the plot, but it is references to these points and if we do not know very well located, you can leave the reader a little confused.
What I liked most is the process of deduction , without boring minute. Sir John makes a lot in this novel, and we know the point of view of an Englishman on the Battle of Culloden, another interesting detail.
Some authors who know us dream, others, like Diana Gabaldon, you know us travel with a realism that becomes an image as sharp as a photograph, it costs nothing to figure out where the human characters move with their weaknesses and secrets that come out of love or loyalty to commit acts of heroism surprised both domestic and foreign (in the case of Trevelyan and characters do not count because it's more of a surprise).
In short, I loved it. I enjoyed from beginning to end and I wonder if the other two books in this series will be published in English as the former is the only thing you can find translated.
